I’ve recently come back from a week long yoga festival, and throughout I was thinking of ways to apply what I was learning at the yoga festival to what we do as SDRs, AEs, and managers.
There are many lessons to relate, and I have decided to start with preparation.
Preparation is so important to success in all walks of life, and especially in relation to sales and sales development.
The preparation I am speaking of starts well before you come in to the office. In fact, it starts at home, where you need to place emphasis on living a healthy life style in order to be successful in your work life. If your home life is disorganized or stressful, that will naturally carry into work. Work to ensure your private relationships are positive and giving you positive energy. Eating well, getting exercise and getting the proper amount of sleep at night are also important to your success in the work place.
When it comes to your time in the office, make sure you are ready to “hit the ground running” when you come in to the office, or at least when it is “go time” for reaching out to prospects. That means taking time either at the end of the previous day or the beginning of the current day to organize yourself for the day’s work. Know which prospects you are trying to reach that day and when you plan to contact them. Have your research done so you are not wasting calling time to look up phone numbers or names.
Plan out your focus time, meaning the times of the day you will be calling, the times you will be emailing, even the times you will be taking breaks, and hold yourself to this schedule. I am a big believer in focus time as a key to success, especially as an SDR.
Finally, set yourself an intention before you start the work day. Instead of just launching into your routine, take a few minutes either in a private place or at your desk to think through what you want to get out of this specific day. Envision the success you want to have, how that is going to make you feel and breathe that in. And take time to focus in on why you are doing what you do — are you hoping to buy a house? a car? take a special vacation? buy yourself or someone special a special gift? It is so important to have this intention is your mind before you start your day and keep coming back to it throughout the transitions during the day.
